Today we are going to be talking about Thanks and Giving, with a beautiful free printable made by Dawn of AD Aesthetic.

But first, I’d like to share an opportunity I had recently to learn more about how our gratitude and generosity really can make a difference.

A Visit to St Jude Hospital

As an ambassador of Shaw floors, I recently had the honor to visit and learn about a cause that Shaw both financially supports and loves- St Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

Shaw Floors Influencers participate in a patient event Monday, November 6, 2017.

It was astounding.

It was humbling.

My faith in both humanity and God was strengthened.

This event is so close to my heart and strengthening to my faith, so I will admit, it is hard for me to share the experience without sharing my feelings of personal faith.  I hope you will understand, and I know, that I know everyone has different faith and beliefs, but I hope that wont take away from what I want to share…

This visit opened my eyes to what each person can do to save the life of a child.  As a parent, whose heart is controlled by invisible strings that bind me to the little people running around in my life, personalizing the fear, pain, and agony that these families must feel after getting a diagnosis was almost too much to bear.

When Danny Thomas founded St. Jude’s, it was a personal pay it forward moment.  When his daughter was born, he had no job, and no money, so he prayed to have the money to bring his child home from the hospital, with the promise that he would do something to pay it back.

In my mind’s eye I could see a loving God happily answering this prayer, knowing that Danny would fulfill his promise in a way that would answer a thousand prayers not yet uttered, for sick children not yet born, but who are just as important to God.

Incredible!

But beyond that what St Jude has done is astounding.

Survival Rates Increase Dramatically

When the hospital was started in about 1962 the survival rate for A.L.L. (a form of leukemia, the most common form of cancer in children) was a 4% chance that your child WOULD LIVE if they were diagnosed.  Think about that, 4%.  Everyone thought they were wasting their time trying to help.

HOWEVER- within ten years they had brought that number up to 54%!  And now they are at 94% chance, with a goal to eradicate childhood cancer.   The overall childhood cancer survival rates were 10% in 1962 and have been pushed to over 80% today.

And again my heart is swelling and my eyes are literally filled with tears as I type this, a 94% chance of life.  It makes me think of Polio, and how they were able to eradicate that.  I believe that someday they will be able to eradicate this cancer, and give all children the chance to live – a 100% chance, every child should have that chance.

I want to just add some other quick notes about things that I learned:

  • St Jude is a research hospital, but instead of holding on to that research so that they can profit off off it and makes millions from creating drugs or what not with the knowledge.  Instead they share that research with other hospitals so that all children can benefit from it as well.
  • It costs 2.4 million dollars a DAY to run the hospital.
  • Families never receive a bill from St Jude for treatment, travel, housing or food because all a family should have to worry about is helping their child live.

Danny Thomas believed that he would rather have one million families or people donate $1.00 than 1 person donate $1,000,000.

I agree!  Each of us can do a small part to help the burdens of another person, to bind our hearts together instead of creating a wider divide in this country and in this whole world.  Think of how it will help us all feel more love for each other and feel a part of our community.

So today I am asking, that if you can,
give whatever you can to St Jude.
